The Region: Asón-Agüera
La Villa de Palacios is located in the Asón-Agüera region, between mountain and sea. Very close to the coastal towns of Laredo and Santoña, half an hour from cabarceno natural park, Santander and Bilbao.
San Miguel de Aras
San Miguel de Aras is a town located east of Cantabria , south of the Aras Valley. He is on the board of Vote like the following municipalities: Bádames, Llanez, Nates, Bueras, Carasa, San Pantaleon de Aras, Secadura, Padiérniga, Rada, San Bartolome de los Montes and San Mames de Aras. It has neighborhoods: Rain, Palace, Caburrao and rage.
San Miguel de Aras is a town protected by mountains in the valley of Aras, near the headwaters of the river Clarin. Located at the bottom of the estuary of Treto (between the estuaries of Rada and Limpias) whereby it opens the Cantabrian Sea. Wetlands included here originate in the Marshes Nature Reserve Santoña . We cross two rivers, which though small are abundant flow, Clarin and Clarion. Originally the force of the water was used to power the mills that were used to grind corn, but now this activity is deprecated.
San Miguel de Aras is located in the valley of Aras named after the office to which most of the inhabitants of this valley, the devoted size of the interest or stones dedicated to be placed on the altars of the churches . Here intensively developed its work the most important stonemasons of Trasmiera The beautiful natural places where people sit Valley are the main source of income of the population, being the main economic activity livestock due to the abundance of grasses and greenery . The population is spread by both a wide territory in which they lived important families as evidenced by their houses and shields . In addition to this noble architecture there are also a popular characterized by the typical houses with sunrooms and galleries, some of them very old.
The mountain
The region of Asón-Agüera is the most unknown of Cantabria. The beauty of its landscapes, paths and routes does of this place an ideal spot for relax and the enjoyment of the nature that reaches its highest point in the Natural Park of Hillocks of the Asón (in Soba), with exceptional views of the valley and birth of the river of the same name in a spectacular waterfall of 50 meters. The birth of the river Gándara, thick forests, numerous routes of great beauty, beautiful rustic villages or the exceptional plateresque altarpiece of the Rozas' church among other architectural wealth.
The sea and the beaches
The town of Laredo with its great beach is 15 min away from our hotel, and at only 3 km you may find the Natural Reserve of the Santoña marshes. This are the most extensive wetlands in the north of Spain. Of great interest for birdwatching, with 121 different species recorded.
Caves and cave paintings
There are a great number of caves in the area, wich are visited by speleologist from around the world. Some are geologically interesting caves as well as great cave painting like Covalanas, Cullalvera, Coventosa, etc. The famous caves of Altamira and "El Soplao" are less than an hour away from our hotel.
Cities & Culture
Our Casona is found half distance of Santander and Bilbao. In about 45 minutes you will be in the center of any of these cities and will be able to enjoy the great cultural offering that both have to offer.
In Bilbao you can find the famous Guggenheim museum of modern art and also the very interesting Museum of Fine Arts. But it shall not to be forgotten the Archaeological Museum , the Etnographic and Historic one or the Diocesan Museum.
In Santander you can visit the Prehistory and Archeology Museum, the Nautic Museum , besides the Fine Arts Museum, and the Maritim Museum of Cantabric.
Outside, but not far from Santander we recommend to visit the Altamira's Museum of Santillana, the Nature's Museum in Cabezón de la Sal, and the National Park of Cabárceno, plenty of wild and exotic species in complete freedom.
